Émérillon stress : a phonetic and phonological study 1
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper explores phonetic and phonological features of the stress system in Émérillon, a Tupi-Guaraní language spoken by approximately 400 people in French Guiana. Stress placement in both elicited wordlist and natural discourse data is examined. Three potential acoustic correlates of stress (fundamental frequency, duration, and intensity) are examined in order to provide quantitative verification of the discovered stress patterns. Results indicate that the domain of stress is the phrase with the metrical parse involving the formation of moraic trochees counting from the right edge of the phrase. The acoustic correlates of stress differ depending on the speaker and whether the data consists of words uttered in isolation or in connected discourse. The results for Émérillon are discussed within a broader context of comparative Tupi-Guaraní stress.

A perceptually - driven account of onset - sensitive stress 1
This paper explores onset-sensitive stress from a typological, phonetic and phonological perspective. A phonetic study of three onset-sensitive stress systems suggests a close match between onset weight distinctions and a phonetic measure of perceptual energy, such that phonological weight criteria are the phonetically most effective ones. Perceptual considerations also offer an explanation for...
متن کاملStudy of Phonological Awareness in Children with Phonological Disorders
Objective: The relationship between phonological awareness and phonological disorders has been considered in recent decades. Phonological awareness deficits in children with phonological disorders could be due to a deficit in phonological abilities. The present study attempts to study the phonological awareness deficits in children with phonological disorders. Materials & Methods: This was ...
متن کاملPhonetic invariance and phonological stability: lithuanian pitch accents
We argue that phonetically invariant realizations of phonological categories imply the synchronic and diachronic imperviousness of such categories to phonological rules and sound laws. We claim that phonetic invariance is the foundation of phonological stability. The category we discuss in this contribution is the pitchaccent. We provide a parametric phonetic description of this phonological ca...
متن کاملConversión Fonética Automática con Información Fonológica para el Gallego
This paper presents a phonetic conversion system with phonological knowledge for Galician. The system allows us to evaluate several phonological processes, like syllabification or phonological derivation, as well as to transcript lexicons with phonetic annotation of different linguistic varieties automatically. The system consists of the following modules: (i) phonological conversion, which gen...
متن کاملThe Effect of English Vowel-Recognition Training on Beginner and Advanced Iranian ESL Learners
This study was an attempt to investigate the effect of vowel-recognition training on beginner and advanced Iranian ESL learners. A total of 36 adult Iranian ESL learners (18 advanced and 18 beginners) who were students of various majors at Memorial University (MUN) were recruited for the study. Advanced participants had the experience of living in Canada for at least three years while beginners...
